Good fashion is inoffensive, sensitive and ethicalThe word “good” has many interpretations but the most common understanding of the word has some moral implications. Good fashion therefore should be interpreted as fashion that should not be offensive to anyone. There are many ways in which fashion can be offensive. Provocative fashion for the sake of being provocative without contributing to aesthetics in any way would be one example of fashion that is not good fashion. Garments that expose the body beyond the tolerance of normal sensibilities would fall in this category. At one time it was in fashion for song lyrics to contain profane language. This too would not be termed as good fashion. Another way in which fashion can be offensive is to hurt the sentiments of a section of society. Fusion fashion is in vogue today. It often involves picking up symbols or patterns from one culture and fusing them into the design of garments for another culture. Sometimes the symbols used are sacred to the culture and they are used insensitively, for example in footwear or in lingerie. This hurts the sentiments of the people belonging to that culture. In the recent past strong protests have been voiced against this type of culture abuse. This is not good fashion. When incorporating aspects of an alien culture proper research is essential to ensure that the product does not offend any group. Infringing on intellectual property rights is illegal. But many find a way to copy by making slight changes in design so that they remain within the realm of the law. However their acts are unethical and would be found offensive by the fashion industry at large. This too is not good fashion. There is no limit to creativity. It is possible to produce work without being offensive or insensitive or unethical. When one can easily create good fashion there is no justification in indulging in what is not good fashion.SwimsuitsForAll.com - Swimwear & More for Missy, Junior, Plus Size Women, Men, Big Men, Girls, Boys, Infants & Toddlers. |
